The historic piece of False Creek real estate known as the Salt Building will finally have a permanent new tenant, just in time for Summer!

Calgary-based Craft Beer Market, Restaurant + Bar will open a new 350-seat restaurant in just a few months, making it the city’s largest tap room.

The iconic 1930 salt packing plant has been mostly unused since it was resurrected as a social hub in the heart of the Olympic Village during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The 14,000-square-foot heritage structure will be divided between a central restaurant area and rooms for private dining and special functions, according to co-owner PJ L’Heureux. The Craft concept is “premium casual” with a heavy reliance on local foods and beer.

The new restaurant will carry 140 beers on tap, flowing through three kilometres of draft lines. Calgary’s Craft carries about two dozen Alberta-made craft beers, but L’Heureux said the Vancouver location could easily have twice that many local brews.

The Vancouver International Children’s Festival runs May 27th to June 2nd.

Tickets for featured performances are $25 per adult, $15 per child including tax and service charges, with exceptions for Sparrow ($25 adult, $5 child) and the Variety Show ($25 adult, $22 child). Show tickets include access to all hands on arts activities.

Here’s a taste of the latest post about Habitat Island:

The answer to the question “Why does Habitat Island even exist?” is fairly complex. Sure it was a nice gesture that they made us an island to hang out on. It looks nice. It’s a perk to be able to pick the berries that grow on it and eat them in the summer. It’s nice that as opposed to the other side of False Creek we’re encouraged to approach the water (see below for a photo looking South off of Habitat Island, then another looking across the water at the untouchable Yaletown waterfront). All of these things make the experience of living in (or visiting) Southeast False Creek great, but it took a lot more than the will to make something nice for the neighbourhood. It took public policy.

The main reason that Habitat Island was built actually has to do with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Prior to 2007 the shoreline in False Creek went all the way back to the far edge of the Salt Building, pictured below. As a matter of fact if you go up to it now and look underneath you’ll see the salty pilings that used to keep it from falling down into the water. In order to make new land to put the public plaza and some of the development onto they actually had to bring in tons and tons of gravel to fill in a portion of the creek. And even though it was polluted industrial shoreline at the time, there’s a federal regulation under the DFO that says when you do that, when you get rid of shoreline for development, you have to make up for it elsewhere by building more shoreline. The answer here was to build an island.

The Village on False Creek has finally come into its own and the neighbourhood continues to grow. It couldn’t be more perfectly located as far as easy access to a myriad of other neighbourhoods including Mount Pleasant, Main Street, Yaletown and Gastown.

Is it time to clean up your False Creek real estate after the holidays?

Disposing of your Christmas tree is usually the biggest hassle, but luckily the City of Vancouver has several sites set up for this weekend.

For those with real estate around False Creek, the Sunset Beach upper parking lot at Beach Ave. and Broughton Street will be hosting a Tree Chipping for Charity event on Saturday January 5th and Sunday January 6th from 10am to 4 pm.

Please bring a cash donation or non-perishable food item.

Please remember that burning your Christmas tree is extremely dangerous. Not only is such a large, dry tree a fire hazard, but pine and fir trees produce a lot of creosote when burning which will build up in your chimney.

If you opted to purchase a real tree this year for your holiday celebrations you can recycle it and help the environment as well as a charity by doing so.

Monk McQueens is somewhat of an icon in False Creek, having occupied its real estate here for twenty-six years. The news of its closing comes as quite a shock.

In a recent Georgia Straight article the owners of Monk McQueens did not specify why they are closing, but perhaps they want to concentrate on ‘Lift’ their Coal Harbour restaurant.

From the Georgia Straight article:

“Since opening for Expo 86, we’ve had an incredible run at Stamps Landing,” Bob Lindsay, owner of Monk McQueens and Coal Harbour’s LIFT Bar & Grill (333 Menchions Mews), stated in a news release today (November 30). “We’ve employed well over 2,000 people, and had a tremendous impact on the community. Find me a Vancouverite that hasn’t been in love or fallen in love on Monk’s deck!”

Taking over from Lindsay will be the Mahony family, owners of Mahony & Sons Public House. The False Creek restaurant will be the third location for the traditional Irish pub, which already has establishments in UBC and at Canada Place. Mahony’s will open in summer 2013 after renovations.

“We are very proud and excited to be opening Mahony & Sons Stamps Landing and look forward to being a part of the growing South False Creek community,” Chris Mahony, proprietor of Mahony & Sons stated in the same news release.

False Creek has many great amenities for residents. It’s an ideal location if you want to make walking a regular part of your life.
