It’s no secret to Vancouverites and those who own real estate around the False Creek seawall that in the Spring and Summer, this one of the most spectacular walks or bike rides anywhere.

Now, our neighbours (or should we say neighbors) to the south are catching on.

Here’s a glowing endorsement by The Seattle Times:

VANCOUVER, B.C. — For an easygoing urban bike ride, it’s hard to imagine anything better than the Seawall route around False Creek and Stanley Park in the heart of Vancouver.

What makes it so great?

• It’s flat. Completely flat. You can ride a whole loop of about 15 miles or break it into shorter loops.

• It’s a paved route for bikes and pedestrians that’s completely separated from cars.

• It’s ridiculously scenic, hugging the waterfront almost all the way with panoramas of downtown high-rises, mountains and sea.

• It offers dozens of enticing stops along the way, including Granville Island Public Market; Science World museum; the Vancouver Aquarium; cafes and restaurants; pocket parks (many with children’s playgrounds) and sandy beaches.

So take yourself, take the kids, take the grandparents. Bike the whole route, or shorter Stanley Park or False Creek loops.

Every time you drive down W. 2nd Ave along Southeast False Creek these days, it seems like another piece of real estate has grown up overnight.

The above picture is a model of future real estate development, including the new Wall Centre False Creek that will be going up around Hinge Park.

Here’s a model of South East False Creek, with the latest idea of how to deal with the site behind the hinge park – the point where the grid shifts. There’s already an approved rezoning for the site from some years back, but that was for the former owners, Millennium, who also developed the Olympic Village. The site was sold as part of their receivership, and the new owners – Concord Pacific – have switched architects to GBL, the designers of several other SEFC projects. You can see two of their schemes on the model, behind their idea for the hinge site. To the left, they designed the part of the Olympic Village that has the curved wave facade; next to it they also designed the four tower Wall Centre False Creek that’s being built with amazing speed at the moment.

The Urban Design Panel workshopped (and preferred) the new design concept this week, which would replace an earlier quite bulky angled building. The new idea is for a curved building almost split into two parts, bending between the alignment of Second Avenue and further phases of development to come on the north side of 1st Avenue alongside the park. The next stage will presumably be a more detailed design.

Southeast False Creek has become an exciting neighbourhood to invest in. It is centrally located and close to Mount Pleasant, Main Street, Yaletown, Gastown and downtown Vancouver.

The new False Creek real estate development ‘Meccanica’ by Cressey Developments just launched their grand opening, and already they are getting press.

The Vancouver Sun recently profiled the Southeast False Creek real estate development:

Meccanica’s tower and its seven-storey neighbour will be connected by an elevated glass walkway allowing tower residents to walk to the lower building to get to common space. Underneath Cressey will build a pedestrian walkway and water feature for the public. “Most people who buy a home here have walked through athletes’ village and they know of the wide open spaces and the walkability,” says Catherine Thaker, sales manager at Mac Marketing, sales organizer for Meccanica.

The development will be within walking distance of the Main Street-Science World SkyTrain stop, and close to Chinatown and downtown to the north, and Mount Pleasant to the south.

To say the area is popular among builders might be an understatement; two large condominium buildings, the Lido and Central, will stand between Meccanica and the SkyTrain station at Terminal and Main.

It’s all a sign that the city’s long-term plans for South East False Creek are bearing fruit, says Jason Turcotte, Cressey’s senior development manager. “There’s a reason many of our peers are interested in the False Creek community. We come to the same conclusion, that this is a great place to live.”

Considering the area’s industrial roots, it may seem appropriate for developers to pay some homage to the history of the ground on which they’re building. Since 1959, Intermeccanica has been building replica vintage Porsches in that block. “We got to know the people at Intermeccanica really well,” says Hani Lammam, Cressey’s vice-president of development and acquisitions.

The nod to Intermeccanica is apparent the moment visitors walk into the presentation centre, where they are greeted by a vintage Porsche.
